ASPB Statement on James Watson Opinions

James D. Watson provoked outrage when he advanced his opinions regarding race and intelligence in an interview with the Sunday Times of London . As scientists we must examine all claims from a scientific perspective. In fact, the weight of scientific evidence does not support Watson's contention that race and intelligence are linked.

The ASPB Executive Committee regrets that Watson's unscientific remarks may be used to the disadvantage of many groups of people. ASPB has a diverse membership and is committed to the fullest development of all plant biologists, regardless of their race, gender, or national origin. In keeping with the preponderance of data on the subject, ASPB rejects the notion that there are racial bases for abstract concepts such as intelligence. We are deeply saddened when a scientist of James Watson's accomplishments and stature diminishes himself and all scientists with such unscientific and deeply offensive comments.
